Brooke County students had a unique opportunity to explore potential career paths and learn about high school courses that can help prepare them for the workforce during the Career Technical Education Fair on Thursday.
The fair, attended by eighth-graders from nearby Brooke Middle School as well as high school students, showcased 14 programs offered by the school district. Students were able to connect with local employers who were seeking applicants with the skills taught in these programs.
According to Michael Berner, the school district’s director of career technical education, there are currently 500 students enrolled in the career technical programs at Brooke High School, out of a total of 850 students.
The programs cover a diverse range of fields, including administrative support, automotive technologies, engineering, and therapeutic services. Students are also given the opportunity to earn college credits through partnerships with local community colleges and universities.
The participation of 46 businesses and organizations in the fair allowed students to explore potential employment opportunities and learn about scholarships and internship programs. Amy Grant, a human resources and recruitment specialist from Weirton Medical Center, highlighted the hospital’s efforts to address the shortage of nurses in West Virginia by offering scholarships to students pursuing nursing degrees.
Representatives from the West Virginia Division of Highways and local manufacturing companies such as American Muscle Docks and Fabrication and Merco Marine were also in attendance to discuss career opportunities with students.
The fair provided a platform for students to gain hands-on experience and valuable insights into various career paths. Teachers and industry professionals offered guidance and advice to students, emphasizing the importance of building professional networks and making informed career decisions.
Overall, the Career Technical Education Fair served as a valuable resource for students, offering a glimpse into the world of work and providing them with the tools and information they need to pursue their career goals.
