“Nepal’s Foreign Minister Addresses Controversy Surrounding Nepali Youths’ Recruitment into Foreign Armies”
The recent press conference held by Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Narayan Khadka, in the heart of Kathmandu, shed light on the controversial issue of Nepali youths being recruited into foreign military services. This topic has sparked nationwide debate and concern, particularly in light of the tragic deaths of seven Nepalis in conflict zones and reports of grievance from their families and concerned citizens.
The Foreign Minister acknowledged that approximately 200 Nepali citizens are believed to be enlisted in the British Army, although exact figures remain uncertain. This revelation has raised ethical and safety concerns regarding the involvement of Nepali citizens in foreign military services.
In response to these issues, the Nepali government has taken steps to manage and regulate the recruitment process through the establishment of the Enlistment Operations Centre (EOC) in six South Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The government has emphasized the importance of transparency in the enlistment process to ensure the rights and safety of Nepali citizens involved.
Furthermore, the government has been in communication with the National Human Rights Commission and other relevant entities to address the situation. Additionally, efforts are being made to facilitate the return of Nepali students and workers from conflict zones, such as Ukraine, and to initiate steps towards the repatriation of Nepali citizens from Israel following a recent attack in which ten Nepali students were reportedly killed.
Historically, the issue of Nepali youths being recruited into foreign armies dates back to the British colonial period when Gurkha soldiers from Nepal were recruited to serve in the British Indian Army. This tradition continued after the partition of India, and today Nepali citizens continue to serve in various foreign military services.
The government’s proactive measures and commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad, especially those involved in foreign military services, demonstrate Nepal’s dedication to managing the complex dynamics of international military enlistment and protecting its citizens.
As the Nepali government continues to address this issue, it remains crucial for stakeholders and the public to remain informed and engaged in discussions surrounding the recruitment of Nepali youths into foreign armies.
