The Iowa National Guard Overcomes Recruitment Shortfalls Amidst National Trend
In a year plagued by record-breaking lows in U.S. Military recruitment, the Iowa National Guard has emerged as a beacon of success amidst the struggle. Since the early days of the pandemic, the Iowa National Guard has been working diligently to address recruiting shortfalls, particularly in the wake of COVID-related reductions in recruiting numbers.
Despite facing its own set of challenges as students returned to school, the Iowa National Guard is now turning a corner as 2023 comes to a close. Lt. Col. Joel Sage, the Recruiting Retention Battalion Commander, expressed optimism about the direction the Iowa National Guard is heading. After realizing that many people were not aware of the National Guard post-pandemic, the organization has made intentional efforts to connect with potential recruits.
While the force is not yet at 100% strength, the Iowa National Guard remains hopeful that they can exceed that threshold by the end of the year. One of the key recruiting tactics has been the education incentives and benefits offered to National Guard members, including up to 100% tuition coverage for Iowa schools. This provides the opportunity for individuals to serve while pursuing higher education or working full-time.
This success stands in stark contrast to the recent struggles faced by the U.S. military as a whole. The Pentagon revealed that the nation’s active-duty force is at its smallest since 1940, and only 23% of young people between 17 and 24 qualify to join the military. The Army, Navy, and Air Force fell short of their recruiting goals, citing the strong economy providing young people with more career options.
However, Iowa’s National Guard has not experienced the same shortfalls as other states, which has been attributed to the state’s strong sense of patriotism. This success story reflects the resilience and adaptability of the Iowa National Guard in navigating through challenging times.
