Berkley City Manager Matthew Baumgarten has announced his resignation after eight years of service to the city. The news was shared by the city in a statement released on Tuesday.
Baumgarten, 40, who has been a resident of Berkley since beginning his role as city manager in 2016, expressed his desire to explore other opportunities while continuing to support communities through public service.
Mayor Bridget Dean praised Baumgarten for his dedication to the community, highlighting his involvement in local activities such as coaching baseball and soccer for his twin sons. Dean commended Baumgarten’s leadership during his tenure, which included the completion of a new city master plan and improvements to parks and recreation facilities.
Baumgarten’s initiatives also led to enhancements in public safety, customer service, and infrastructure within Berkley. Despite facing financial challenges due to state funding cuts, Baumgarten’s efforts to secure grants and implement new policies helped the city navigate through difficult times.
As Berkley prepares for a transition in city management, Baumgarten will assist with the appointment of an interim city manager before a new permanent hire is made. Mayor Dean expects the search process to take three to four months, with Baumgarten’s support during the transition period.
This news comes as a significant development in Berkley’s history, marking the end of Baumgarten’s impactful leadership and the beginning of a new chapter for the city’s administration.
