Lindsey Harding, the coach of the Sacramento Kings’ G League team, is reportedly in the running for the head coaching position with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. If hired, Harding would make history as the first woman to be named head coach of an NBA team.
According to ESPN, the Hornets have been granted permission to interview Harding for the job, which became available after Steve Clifford announced he would be stepping down as head coach after the 2023-24 season. Harding, who was voted the 2024 G League Coach of the Year, led her team to the Western Conference finals this season.
A former WNBA player, Harding was the No. 1 pick of the Phoenix Mercury in the 2007 draft. She played nine seasons in the WNBA before transitioning to coaching. Last season, Harding made history as the only woman head coach in the G League when she debuted against the Santa Cruz Warriors in November 2023.
In addition to her coaching experience in the WNBA and G League, Harding has also coached the Mexican women’s national team since 2002. She has a strong background in basketball and a proven track record of success as a coach.
The Hornets are also considering other candidates for the head coaching position, including Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman, Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez, Boston Celtics assistant Charles Lee, and Phoenix Suns assistant Kevin Young.
It will be interesting to see how the coaching search unfolds for the Hornets and if Lindsey Harding will make history by becoming the first woman to lead an NBA team as head coach.
