Sanitation Worker’s Suicide Sparks Outcry and Demands for Justice

The University of Hyderabad recently witnessed protests by its Student Union and sanitation workers in response to the tragic death of K Praveen, a sanitation worker who died by suicide on December 12 on the university campus. Praveen’s death has prompted allegations that Section Officer Mallesh may have abetted the suicide, leading the university administration to form a committee to investigate the matter.

According to sanitation workers, the workload has significantly increased in recent years due to layoffs, leading to only two workers managing the duties that three used to handle. There are also allegations of caste-based harassment and preferential treatment by Mallesh, as well as a lack of necessary cleaning equipment and delayed salaries.

The protests also touched on the death of office assistant Vinod in the University’s Hindi Department, with students alleging that negligence led to his demise. Demands from the Student Union and workers include fair compensation for Praveen’s widow, the removal of Mallesh, and improvements to working conditions.

Following the protests, the University issued a circular committing to streamline the working conditions of outsourced sanitation staff. A committee has also been formed to examine the circumstances surrounding Praveen’s death and make recommendations for improvements to the workers’ conditions.
